I once heard a story of a mother who did that very same thing years ago. Her's was a completely different case though, because she had siezures that left her in a daze afterwards and she unintentionally killed her own child.

But she still went to prison.

Not really. On a world scale, things are going great! Out of six billion people, this sort of thing only happens a few hundred thousand times. Most (about two thirds) of us folks live harmoniously and sustainably ... only 1 billion of people aren't harmonious because they're starving and only 1 billion aren't living sustainably because they live in the first world (that would be us).

I couldn't be bothered to read further into this story (must I really?) but is this the case where the mother was trying to dry off the baby or something. It's reasonably likely to have been drunken (or other) stupidity rather than malicious intent (though the consequences for the individual are insurmountably bad).

But back to the Darwinism. If all mothers/fathers who have a genetic tendency to commit infanticide do so, then this sort of thing will decrease or disappear in the future when there are no surviving adults with this tendency left to have more kids. Karma or what? Doesn't that thought give any of you true inner peace?

I know it sounds cruel, but I agree. People that have stupid genes shouldn't be reproducing.

Oh, actually, I didn't say that. "Stupid" is a cultural bias.

The one and only determinant of the future gene pool is "fitness". Fitness is a technical term, not what you think, but actually defined as "measure of ability to produce offspring who themselves reach reproductive capacity".

So, for example, if worshipping Britney [sic] Spears leads to a culture of massive binge drinking, early motherhood, dysfunctional family life followed by premature death ... then as long as the drug addicted babies have kids of their own, the "system" will be "successful" and continue to propagate. You don't even need to be happy for it to work! On the other hand, if intelligent, rational, civilised people clench their fists in despair at the world around them and retreat into the wilderness without raising kids, then that intelligence dies off.

That is why I believe the most important thing ever is for all of us to Resist Temptation and Pursue Truth and Knowledge at all times.... albeit, that's my cultural bias, others may say: "life's a party, let's play until we die."

That's why I believe that human nature (the kidness factor) prevents the survival of the fittest. The way the world is going, we'll be living with billions of stupid people that won't work for a living and collect welfare.

I'm not taking a stab at anything...

Color me heartless, but I think that useless stupid people should be put into a little country of their own where they can die off without affecting the rest of us. It would totally work.

I wouldn't call you heartless ... just oversimplistic.

Like I said, "stupid" is a cultural bias. Some people would call us a complete and total waste of space for drooling over such useless items as graphics cards while they struggle to help the starving or educate the helpless or free the enslaved. You wouldn't want them to put *us* in a little country of our own to die off, would you? It totally wouldn't work.
