Rep: He was a hippy. A peace-loving, love-loving lad of his time. He was a Jew, and didn't like some Jewish ideas about God as a strict ruler - all he did was preach love into his religion.
Some people liked it. Some people hated it. In the end, most of Rome liked it - and a certain organization, (now) knows as the Roman Catholic Church, used this to gain power. There followed a millenium where the R.C.C. was the most powerful and violent bully in the playground, helped by bullies like the Franconian Empire and later the Holy Roman Empire Of German Nationality. (which was neither holy, nor roman, nor an empire; but it was in part German (but also Italian)).
Along the way, some Frenchmen kidnapped the leader of said organization and started an opposition in Avignon. Even later, some small guys bullied the not-so-big bullies in France and the then-to-ecome USA.
To survive and disguise corruption, the R.C.C. went a wee bit "back to the roots"
