Possible to get a virus froma flash drive? Way to get files without getting virus?

Got a new laptop.

My old one was 5 years old, super slow processor, and possibly infected by a virus or two. Already tossed it out.

All my valuable files and what not are saved on a 4 GB flash drive.

Do I risk infecting my new computer by plugging in the flash drive and getting my documents off of it? What do I do?
