ASE chat ?

just an idea... what about an ASE live chat room ?
one would have to think about the technology used first, of course. There is IRC, which is the traditional way thru and thru. There is also jabber, which is stable and free for all, with many decent free clients available, like Miranda, Gaim, Adium etc.
I have written a little simple chat program which could be considered... (mind you, I have never tested it on the internet or with many users and it is very limited) it is available in a freeware windows-only version and a GPL cross-platform alpha version which would be continued if it found use....
jabber and my creation are probably the simplest to set up...

I'm not too fond of AIM myself because that would effectively make the chat room dependant on some big bad American coorporation. Gaim/Jabber should be similiarly easy to set up but free and independant

Gaim and AIM are essentially the same.

If you start a chat with Gaim, it's accessable by AIM, so long as it's the AIM setup of it.

Gaim is a multi-protocol IM client. It doesn't only support AIM.
I would prefer avoiding the AIM network in favour of a free network, jabber being the obvious/only reasonable choice.

Yeah. I never got a jabber name. Mainly because I know no one that uses it. I have everything else. If we were to use Jabber, I'd need to know where to get a name.

jabber is an instant messaging protocol, like MSN messenger, AIM, ICQ. The big advantage is the free nature of it. Anyone may legally write a client (the program the user uses) for the documented jabber protocol.
Jabber is as free as Linux or the technology behind the WWW.

The problem with other IM protocols should now be relatively clear. These are controlled by large companies like Microsoft, America Online or Yahoo!, Inc. These companies do not document the protocols. They have complete control over their networks, so they could easily change the protocol used, lockin out third-party clients, monitor it too much or similiar.
Microsoft, for instance, does not allow third-party clients, so they may be able to sue the authors of Miranda, Gaim, Kopete, AMsn, Adium etc into oblivion.

the /Gaim is not actually part of the address, it is used for distinguishing different "versions" of you if you log in multiple times at once.
