Jewelry you never take off Old Fri May 25, 2007 5:35:03 PM #38488 Perm Link
Anyone else have jewelry that they always leave on? My sister swears this is gross to do, but I have a necklace that I bought right before something big and unexpected happened to me, my wedding ring and another ring that has sentimental value. I very seldom take any of these off. Anyone else?

I used to have pierced ears but they kept getting infected and would ooze pus so I took them out and never turned back =D

I don't wear jewelry ever (unless glasses count, but I'm assuming not) and thus have none to take off/keep on.

Huh? Signature? What's going on with that signature?

I don't wear a lot of jewelry in the first place. I have on my wedding band, ALWAYS. Not that I'm afraid I'll forget I'm married if I take it off, Wink It's just that I've been married almost 21 years, it's like a part of me. I do miss it when I DO take it off, I just don't feel right without it.

Dare I ask where your piercing are, Sam[]am, and why they have more of a point than those on the ears?

Decoration and pleasure...that's the point to piercings. Some find them sexy, beautiful, pointless, ugly...everyone has their tastes. It's just like someone dying their hair or cutting it...something temporary that pleases oneself &/or others.
Tattoos are similar, but differ in being permanent.
I have several piercings that are covered, only a select few have seen them. & I don't mind you asking, but that's all the answer you'll get from me.

My opinion on piercings: I find ear piercings to be pointless bc their in a place to be shown, yet ppl always seem to cover them...and plugs smell horrible. yuck! I don't like when people get their dimples pierced or fake mole on their face bc it just looks tacky. One more that I don't like is when people get their septum pierced [the "cow" when you get it pierced in the mid of your nose] bc one, it messes up smelling things, two you can feel something always in your nose, and three when you go to blow your nose bc of something in it, it hurts like a bitch!! I don't mind any other piercing though.

It's just what people like and want, usually for themselves. Same goes for hair, style in clothes, kind of beer you drink, tattoos, car you drive or want...etc. All about personalization...who you are...what you're all about...

For a second I thought you said "drying their hair" and I was trying to figure out how one really had control over their hair drying. Besides the rate in which that happens.
Technically, piercings are permanent. You can take something out and the hole will eventually close over, but since your body has already grown around the piercing, the hole will still be there. Just covered. But don't quote me on that.

Personally, I've always had a problem with tongue piercings. They don't look particularly comfortable and they're the absolute worst if you're unlucky enough to get an infection. Infection kills the tongue, no more talking. Or the opening makes way for other non-piercing infections because the human mouth has a fuckton of bacteria in it. Not to mention STDs and the like. Although I guess it at least has a purpose, albeit a stupid one. Unlike eyebrow/nose piercings which are pointless and amazingly unattractive.

Huh? Signature? What's going on with that signature?

I've got my snakebite piercings and my ears and that's it...I take the snakebites out for work though...and I only wear small hinged hoops to make the process quicker. I can't stand the ones with the balls on them, they always fall off, what's the point in that. I had a monroe twice but both times, soon after, I got a job interview and had to cover it up and it looked like a big giant swollen zit and so I said, forget it.

For the most part I keep on my wedding rings. They come off sometimes when I do the dishes because the soap isn't good for the stone. And I have a couple of ankle bracelets that I wear all summer long. But, other than that I can't stand the feel of jewelry. Earrings, watch, anything comes off the minute I walk in the door.

I take my watch off as soon as I get in the door, too. I can't stand to leave the house without it, but I can't relax with it on. I haven't worn my engagement ring in years. It is a very impractical piece (raised stone). Plus, my husband and I got new bands a few years ago (I developed an allergy to gold, he lost his ring, and we both lost a ton of weight) and my engagement ring doesn't match the new band.

I have a few pairs of heirloom earrings passed down to me from my great-grandmother that mean a lot to me. I wear those when I remember. Otherwise my ears go bare most days. I also have two or three "fine jewelry" pieces that came to me various ways. I put those in for evening events, because I feel unpolished without them in evening apparel/hair.

Oh, are watches jewelry? I always assumed jewelry was the impractical stuff people wear, like necklaces and earrings. I take off my watch when I get home too. I'm anxious if I have to leave the house without it, I thought that was unique to me but I guess not XD

I consider my current watch vaguely jewelry-like because it is a step or two up from my usual cheapies. I think it's a judgment call though.

I also wear glasses, but don't consider them jewelry.

Ah, see, my watch could never be considered jewelry. It's pretty much the cheapest thing I could find, it's not even metal. I just wanted something to tell the time.

I don't consider my glasses jewelry, either. Way too practical for jewelry.

I myself developed an allergy to gold rings when I was about 18, and the coffeeshop I worked at started putting bleach or something in the soapwater used to scrub tables and equipment. Soon afterwards, whenever water got trapped under my rings, I developed a rash under them and a burning itch. I'm pretty sure that's the cause...do you know what happened for you?

I track mine back to using ammonia to clean a nasty bathtub. After that, like you said, anytime water got under the rings I would break out. Anytime I smelled ammonia I would break out around my nose (still do)! My dermatologist said it was most likely a to the impurities in the gold rather than the gold itself, but it is easier just to say "I'm allergic to gold". I also break out if I wear silver for more than 5-6 hours.

Now, I only wear titanium rings. I have two that I wear all the time and have never broken out with.

You know, my dermatologist always kind of mocked me for saying the cleaning incident started the sensitivity, so I'm heartened in my instincts if yours was triggered similarly.

I have a problem with silver, too. But my husband keeps buying it for me. I've asked him NOT to, but he says it's cheaper than gold, and all he can afford right now. So, I have some really nice necklaces that I can't wear, unless with a turtleneck.
