A term that has gotten thrown around so much that it's lost it's meaning. The general consensus is that it means "emotional" and refers to bands that have sappy lyrics. Not always the case, to tell you the truth. I think the bastardization of emo came with many pop-punk//hardcore bands that have a certain style of dress. You know, the slanty hair, tight pants, etc. So basically, it's a term that's used to refer to music or listeners to a certain type of music based on their dressing habits and "mannerisms".

It's incorrect when used this way but what can I say, times are a-changin'.
